Unknown Terminology: Being the medical language a specialty language and coming from the area of Statistics and Social Sciences, there is whole disciplinary terminology that I ignore and it demands performing of my documentary competence, which acts as a transversal axis on the technical translation process. It is present in terms such as: anterior cruciate ligament, cell cultures, cell passaging, collagen matrix scaffold, decorin, donor site morbidity, massive rotator cuff tears, mesenchymal stem cells, reverse shoulder prosthesis.
Finding the right meaning was solved via consultation of several Medical and Biological Dictionaries, like:

Choosing the right one between multiple synonyms for the Spanish translation of “tear”: desgarro, desgarre, desgarramiento, ruptura, rotura. This hesitation between the available nouns and whose of them would result acceptable inside medical terminology reveals some lack of communicative competence in two languages, according to the PACTE Holistic Model, that must be solved as soon as possible. As a general remark, I must say that in translating this hypothetical case, I made an intensive use of the communicative competence in order not to miss out on meaninglessness, nonsense, etc. in the description of the culture procedure and the passage of mesenchymal stem cells -and of another origin- in the treatment of tears of the rotator cuff of the shoulder, consulting documentation on the subject and carrying out searches and comparisons of content and meaning that I considered pertinent. Therefore I have made inquiries on:

Solution: Use of the terms “desgarro” and “desgarre”, as the most common used in medical journals, so I used it indistinctly in the translation.
Finally, I cannot ignore the participation in this assignment, of interpersonal competence (this already, within the model of D. Kelly, or included in the strategic competence of the PACTE group model) and I must acknowledge the selfless dissemination of videos, pictures and documentation on the topic of treatments for rotator cuff ruptures by our teammate Thelma Rodríguez, always generous and attentive. Her references helped to clarify several of our doubts in the performing of the translation.
